Episode 316 – HU SpinKicks 1 Ninja Zelda and Some Wagakki

With Special guests CoreyGeek (from the Geekspin Podcast) and Thomas Carpenter (from the High Frequency Kicks Podcast). Thomas brings in some new, strange music to our Podcast. You may not have heard of everything we cover in the episode, so check the links to each of the music videos and open your ears (and eyes) to some different music you need to check out, featuring traditional instruments with mainstream ones. (7:33) We lead the show off with Ninja Sex Party, an incredibly talented duo with impeccable musical chops. The first song is about their singer talking to the younger version of himself, featuring, you know, that kid from Stranger Things. Ninja Sex Party – Daddy Don’t You Know https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kT8cX2-_7pQ (9:28) And because the last song was such a great romp, we did one more from Ninja Sex Party called Mansion Party. Ninja Sex Party - Mansion Party https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNoafUU4Ikw Next is a spin off group of Ninja Sex Party, featuring some Rooster Teeth peeps. Star Bomb’s song is about an inappropriate creep in Nintento’s Zelda games. (19:16) Star Bomb – Best Zelda Rap Ever https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0m9QUoW5KnY (23:52) And because we are nerds, we dove headlong into a talk about Zelda, and (28:04) talk about the Nintendo Switch. (31:52) Gregorian throat singing? Traditional instruments? The HU has all that and more, including a banging bass and drums and this beautifully shot video. The HU – Yuve Yuve Yu https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4xZUr0BEfE (37:36) And because throat singing is so close to metal in some ways, we also watched their cover of Metallica. The HU - Sad But True https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QpxA_ZxGX_M (39:32) SeanGeek and FastFret are both East Coasters and were raised on Celtic music, a love that Thomas has always had. So what happens when bagpipes mix with a sludgy sound? You get the Sidh. The Sidh – Iridium https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amJ_WLmOKS0 (43:28) Next up is a Japanese band called Wagakki. They play traditional Japanese instruments, with lush production meshing with modern music, and insane visuals. This 8 person band features two drummers and a number of different stringed instruments and even a wind instrument that would slay any and every Kenny G. The video chosen shows just how big this band is and how insane the musicians are. Just look at that crowd. Wagakki – Homura + Akatsuki no Ito / 1st Japan Tour 2015 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ponTbDDMYjw (53:04) SeanGeek adds his own to the list with his favorite all time performer, the funky That 1 Guy. Unconventional to the point that he built his own instrument called “The Magic Pipe”, this DYI instrument emulates a guitar, bass, drums, with tight songwriting and impeccable timing. That 1 Guy – Mustaches https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XHt32UVqLk (58:34) And because we did not get enough of Ninja Sex Party, we also watched one more from the guys called Welcome To My Parents, an ode to Danny Sexbang’s sexy home (which happens to be his parent’s house – because, duh, he still lives at home) and the stealthy Ninja Brian. Ninja Sex Party’s - Welcome to my Parent’s House https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YXUWWZJXpE (1:00:05) After this great offering of some great tunes, the gang discusses the failings of modern radio, and the 5 artists that get played, there is still some great music out there. These bands prove that you can still go out there and be original, and still make great music, regardless of how niche it may be. (1:04:22) Sign Off (Due to technical issues, we lost CoreyGeek after about 15 minutes of the show.) Hi, I am Sean "SeanGeek" McGinity. And I am a geek. For me, the definition of the word geek comes from liking something so much, that I deep dive into it. Not just consuming it... but becoming it. I "geek out". Everything started with comics. I read them and studied them with a fine eye, and then started making my own. Since then, I have "geeked out" on movies (Star Wars The Evil WIthin, Hurt), music writing, recording, and performing (The Classic Embers and Dome), writing (the Symka comic and the upcoming Intuitives novel), and now... this Podcast.

Hey guys, SeanGeek here. Just to be clear, this is me geeking out on Todd "FastFretFingers" McGinity here. Todd is the GOAT. My brother is an established musician, mastering the Fretboard with a blistering discipline. If there was a guitar style, tone, pitch... Todd would find a way to replicate it. From his early days mastering Van Halen and Rush, his musical palate has expanded with forays into classical and flamenco, hard rock, blues and pop. From live performances to learning the recording process, when it comes to music, he has done it all.
