Episode 367 – The Musical Theory Behind Poutine Rapees

(2:32) SeanGeek’s kids have started making their own comic books! What are there comics about? We talk about Sean’s own stash of his own home-made comics he made as a kid and how he diverged his love of comics into a love of story-writing. We dip back into the comic book company he was part of as a kid with some friends. (10:20) How are the kids doing with their piano lessons and how has that impacted our own learnings as musicians ourselves. We slip into our beginnings into music, learning theory and tablature.

(12:54) We talk about learning music through flexible records that were inserted into music magazines like Guitar Player (and also included in Mad Magazine issues). We talk drum and guitar theory and reading music, time signatures, Dragon Studios, the “sloppy” playing style of Jimmy Page and Eddie Van Halen and how important the drummer is to that kind of player.

(25:20) We pull from the list to talk wineskins, their origins and if they are still being used, the god Bacchus, the band Bacchus, haggis and some bad accents, pubadelic bands.

(31:25) What is a poutine and is it related to a Maritime poutine (rapees)? What is blood sausage? What is Warm and Fuzzy and why does it involve the police? (We share a story about our old band Salty Bear.)

(43:59) Recommendations: Bulk Barn finds and The Realistic Rock Drum Method by Carmine Appice.

You know where to find Bulk Barn. You can find the Carmine Appice book here: https://www.amazon.com/Updated-Realistic-Rock-Drum-Method/dp/0897050126

Sean McGinity

Hi, I am Sean "SeanGeek" McGinity. And I am a geek. For me, the definition of the word geek comes from liking something so much, that I deep dive into it. Not just consuming it... but becoming it. I "geek out". Everything started with comics. I read them and studied them with a fine eye, and then started making my own. Since then, I have "geeked out" on movies (Star Wars The Evil WIthin, Hurt), music writing, recording, and performing (The Classic Embers and Dome), writing (the Symka comic and the upcoming Intuitives novel), and now... this Podcast.

Todd McGinity

Hey guys, SeanGeek here. Just to be clear, this is me geeking out on Todd "FastFretFingers" McGinity here. Todd is the GOAT. My brother is an established musician, mastering the Fretboard with a blistering discipline. If there was a guitar style, tone, pitch... Todd would find a way to replicate it. From his early days mastering Van Halen and Rush, his musical palate has expanded with forays into classical and flamenco, hard rock, blues and pop. From live performances to learning the recording process, when it comes to music, he has done it all.

Karen Bee

A lover of stories, beer, and cats, and a master of none. Catch me talking to Geek Boy every so often for the latest comic book TV show or movie, Star Wars, board games and other things cool. Hear me give my two cents, relate them to other things I know, and make other recommendations!
