Episode 446 – Flexi Records and the Brooklyn Tom Petty with Kevin Brown

This week we welcome musician Kevin Brown from Seaside Pod Review and the Tom Petty Podcast. We open the show with some talk opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff and the Small Town Titans. (1:48) We speak on vocal techniques and some singers with specific intonations (we reveal where James Hetfield from Metallica picked up his vocal affectation) and Axl Rose got his.

We talk about the vocals on Dome and where the voice came from. And speaking of vocals, let’s take a listen to the McGinity’s mom Eileen. (15:33)

We talk some more on the Bros Before Gin album and Cybershopping, Serious, and Broken. (20:06) We also talk about Steve Vai and his audition with Frank Zappa. (26:55) And let’s not forget Yngwie F’Ing Malmsteen! (29:24) Jason Becker was another guitar prodigy who went on to play with David Lee Roth for a few weeks before he got hit with ALS. (32:02) We talk about how great Eddie Van Halen was with him.

Kitchen Parties is where Todd and Sean came from. (39:37) But really what it was was open access to instruments. Kevin and us talk about giving access to kids and the next generation. Carmine Appice and his drum teaching is hilarious. (49:31) We speak about flexi records and skips and if Tom Petty was from Brooklyn.

We finish he episode with Kevin’s song Never Said (57:12)

Sean McGinity

Hi, I am Sean "SeanGeek" McGinity. And I am a geek. For me, the definition of the word geek comes from liking something so much, that I deep dive into it. Not just consuming it... but becoming it. I "geek out". Everything started with comics. I read them and studied them with a fine eye, and then started making my own. Since then, I have "geeked out" on movies (Star Wars The Evil WIthin, Hurt), music writing, recording, and performing (The Classic Embers and Dome), writing (the Symka comic and the upcoming Intuitives novel), and now... this Podcast.

Todd McGinity

Hey guys, SeanGeek here. Just to be clear, this is me geeking out on Todd "FastFretFingers" McGinity here. Todd is the GOAT. My brother is an established musician, mastering the Fretboard with a blistering discipline. If there was a guitar style, tone, pitch... Todd would find a way to replicate it. From his early days mastering Van Halen and Rush, his musical palate has expanded with forays into classical and flamenco, hard rock, blues and pop. From live performances to learning the recording process, when it comes to music, he has done it all.
